Fall in to my left, your right, Savages. At ease. The Kraken is a veteran-owned business, and we're proud of that. Wanna talk to you today about what we don't do today, what we do today, what YOU should not do today, and what you should do today. We don't exactly stay away from politics, but for the sake of business and fellowship and friendship, we live and let live on most issues. We got our thing, you got your thing, and that's a cool thing. We ain't here to tell you what to do. We're a bar, and our job is to give a cool place to come yell at your friends about politics, not a place for us to weigh in. On the one hand that feels like professionalism, but the other hand stinks of greed and cowardice. We know that, and we've done better about that this year. What hasn't changed is our position on Veteran's Day. The Kraken will set a table every day for any veteran down on his or her luck that wants a hot meal, a cold beer, and a game to escape the dark for a while. Hey, my brother who's down in the dark place; I'm talking to you. I'm not joking, hero. Come get some food, a drink, and a game with me, on me, any day of the whole damn year. You ain't even gotta tell me you need it for free; I ain't interested in your thanks or your apology. I'm the DFAC, man, so come get it and just tell me you gotta make movement and leave when you leave. I got it. Every day. All the time. Every. Day. We will, not, however, put yellow magnet stickers on our stuff, nor offer Buy-One-Get-One Whatevers for Vets, nor paper our Facebook feed with Veteran Support Pictures. We will not participate in what has become the money-making Veteran-support industry, and you shouldn't either. No free appetizers to get you in my door so I can take your money on other items. No BOGOs that insult your intelligence (like you don't know my markup on the one you buy covers the one you don't and more). Those deals and Veterans Day promotions hurt my heart, because they're designed to drive business, not to help my brothers and sisters in the Dark Places. I used to ask this humbly, but I'm not asking today. Keep that in mind today, and all year long really, when you post your Veterans-support FB status. Your likes, your thoughts, your prayers, and your knick-knacks from China do very little, if anything, for us. That free fried food situation on Sunday doesn't drop a dime in the suicide prevention bucket on Monday. Or the depression bucket, or the physical therapy bucket, or the "how to put your life back together after living in a desert prison away from your family" bucket. Civilians, you don't have to help; we don't expect it, and I don't think you should feel bad if you don't. You're busy living free and safe, which is why some of us put the uniform on to begin with. But if you want to help? To actually help? Then we need your time. The valuable stuff. Don't say "I support the troops" and go about your day, feeling good about the magnet on the back of your minivan. Go DO something. Take a homeless vet to SportClips. Get him a hot meal THAT YOU SIT AND EAT WITH HIM. Ask your uncle to tell you his war stories, and ask follow up questions. Many of my brothers and sisters are rowing their boats with both hands and feet and still sinking. Grab a god damned paddle if you wanna help, don't cheer from the shore. Soldiers, call your brothers and sisters today. You're their net, even if you're falling. That is not a humble request, it's mandatory. Grab the phone, hero. You got a job to do. Don't panic. Trust me and read to the end. A few months ago, we learned that our landlord had listed our building for sale. A few weeks ago we learned that someone had purchased it would be doubling the rent. Don't panic. There's a tough economic reality to deal with before we proceed. When we moved in, 871 Howard was a derelict building, not-to-code, plants-growing-inside fixer-upper and it was leased to us at a "derelict building with plants growing inside" rate. The tough reality is that we put a whole lot of money and love and time into making the place functional, if not really good, and because we did, we made the place valuable enough to rent at a far more competitive rate. We can't afford that rate, but that doesn't make the new landlord a bad guy for knowing that the building is worth more now that we've made it worth more. It's just a reality. Don't panic. After negotiations with the new landlord, we agreed to a 25% increase on our rent and we agreed to sacrifice 50% of the building's floorplan, which means the Kraken will be downsizing at the end of the month. Don't panic. The Common Room, the Burrow, the War Room, and CastNet Media Studios will no longer be our property. Cast Net Studio is staying on with us, and will be taking over the Middle Earth Room. The Great Hall will house the entirety of our business moving forward. Here's WHY you shouldn't panic. First, this isn't a bad thing. Those of you who are our regulars know that our Monday night, Tuesday night, Thursday night, and Sunday night events tend to fill the War Room and not the Great Hall. Our Wednesday Trivia tends to fill the Great Hall and not the War Room, which means that we've been paying for a whole building we've only ever really needed half of anyway. Second, this is a good thing. The new landlord is heavily invested in the profitability and sustainability of the building, and our new lease ensures a number of exciting improvements, including new Air Conditioning for the Great Hall, separate utility metering (meaning our utility expenses will drop about 66%, more than covering the rent -hike), a front-awning, roof and exterior concrete repair, a replacement of all the wooden window frames, and a paint job for the building. Thirdly, a reduced footprint gives us the opportunity to better serve you. For the last two years, when business has been moving in the Great Hall, War Room patrons were neglected, and vice versa. At the end of the month, your Friendly Neighborhood Bartender will be able to better service all of you, all the time. Our merchandise will be more centrally located and accessible, and replacing our couch and coffee-table setup with the high-tops from the War Room will add more seats (you're welcome Don Hartfield). Each of the regulars we intimated this news to reacted the same way; with an "OH NO!" Guys, we did too, at first. The idea of paying more for half the building wasn't ideal, but the new landlord knows and agrees that the Wayward Kraken is the reason the building has any value at all, and knows that loads of people have tried to make 871 work and only we have succeeded in recent memory. He wants us there and he's working with us to keep us there, so it's all good. We'll be closing on 19 November for renovations and in the meantime, virtually everything in the Common Room, Burrow, and War Room is up for sale; so if you need some furniture at a crazy-low price, hit us up. We've got a few display cases and stuff for sale too, as well as some of the art and decorations hanging on the walls. Don't panic. It's gonna be fine. This is fine.

Alright team, bring it in. Take knee. Drink some water Adam, for Thor's sake. Last week one of our regulars and family had a death in the family. Tragic one. The kind where the family found the body. Nuff said. The Kraken is looking for volunteers to give up their Saturday to go clean the home of the deceased. She had a bunch of cats and they went berserk when she passed, so the place is the stuff nightmares are made of. It's a gross job, and the family is hurting, so we've offered to go do the nasty part. We've got a handful of helpers already, but the more folks who can brave the gross, the less gross we all have to brave. So if you're free or able to get free this weekend, drop us a line. We're convoying from the Kraken at noon over to Slidell, and working til the job's done. Should take some hours, and less for each additional body that comes with. If you can help, fall in to my left. If you've already offered your help, like Anthony, Travis, Roger, Corley, Scott, and the folks at maCnarB Gaming, thank you. To the family, we love you. Sorry for the Spam, you guys. We got a lot going on in November, and wanted to make sure you guys had access to it. Here's the highlights: Trivia is a General Knowledge Reset this week. Sabacc Night is gonna be off the chain, RSVP now because we're only taking a handful of players for that. Lil Kraken Read-along this Sunday. We're closed on 18 November and 22 November. Alex was our greatest hire. Recently he got a great job opportunity and so it is with bittersweet reluctance that tonight we will be saying goodbye to him. Lex was the first person to want to work for us. In the last two years he has been an essential part of our operation and despite my faith in our crew, I worry having to replace him.
